How Africa Tweets

South Africa has the highest number active Twitter users on the continent, with double the number of users of the second most active country, Kenya. A study by Portland Communications shows that adoption in Africa has been driven by a younger audience than in North America and Europe with 60% of those posting messages in their twenties.

Growing numbers

According to a study by World Wide Worx, at the end of August 2012, 5.33-million South Africans were using Facebook on the Web, 2,43-million Twitter and 9,35-million Mxit. According to the report the Twitter user base had grown to 2,2-million by the end of June 2012, or 100 000 new users a month since August 2011.

Most popular day

The World Wide Worx social media study also revealed that the biggest tweeting day of the week is a Monday, with an average of 9,6-million tweets sent by South Africans on the first working day of the week. Friday is next most popular day, with 9.6-million, while Saturday is the slowest Twitter day, with 8,4-million tweets.
